Wedding - Nassain and Daniel

Nassain and Daniel were married on 11 Jan this year, surrounded by their nearest and dearest on the Paddle Steamer Decoy!

It was a hot, hot summer day - somewhere around the 40°C mark, but a seabreeze appeared out of nowhere, right as the Decoy left Mends St jetty to commence the ceremony. Maybe it's just Perth, but there has to be something about weddings that makes the universe smile. I've attended so many weddings now, where the weather turned right just in time for the bride to walk down the aisle and festivities to commence.

Mark of Aduro Images assisted me on this shoot, and captured this absolutely magic shot:

It was a wonderful summer wedding, and we're very honoured to have been their wedding photographers. Thanks for letting us share your special day, Nassain and Daniel!

Wedding Album

I managed to deliver this particular album to my clients personally via jet. Talk about style eh?

Only joking. It was nothing as glamorous as that. My recent trip to Sydney to visit with E and her boy, meant i could deliver this particular album in person, so i did. As well as taking the opportunity to photograph the finished product in a great setting.

E and her boy waited a long time for this album, as their wedding was last May.

I must clarify that my clients wait no more than a few weeks for their wedding albums! This particular occasion was the privilege of a long and illustrious friendship :)

A Radiant Spring Wedding in Perth

Sevan and Lorne sealed their committment to each other in November last year, on a radiant spring day. We met the couple at Kings Park first for a location shoot among the stately conifers, before travelling to East Victoria Park for the ceremony.

The wedding service was a coptic orthodox ceremony at St Mary and Archangel Michael Orthodox Church. This was the first of such ceremonies that we've had the pleasure of photographing, and it was a fantastic eye opener to another culture that we've not had the privilege of experiencing until now.

The reception was held at Frenchy's in Como, a sit down dinner followed by speeches and great food. Afterwards, the bridal party and the guests hit the dance floor and partied until midnight.

Sevan and Lorne, the newly wed Mr and Mrs Smith, thank you for sharing your special day with us. We had a heap fun being your wedding photographer.

Melita and Brett's Engagement Shoot

Melita and Brett's engagement shoot took place in Kings Park just a few days before Christmas. We had a good run with the weather for this particular shoot. First of all, it was before the Perth summer really hit (read: heat wave), and secondly, the on-off rain on that day cleared just as we began the shoot.

We talk a lot about the weather here, but it's a pivotal element which defines how each photographer shoots on the day. On this particular day, the diffused, post-rain evening glow allowed us to produce images like this:

That, and how game our couple was. Melita was a natural in front of the camera, which left Brett with no choice but to play along ;)

Kings Park was the site of Brett's proposal to Melita, so it was a natural choice for this shoot.

We asked Brett to recreate the proposal...

... and Melita made sure to examine the ring properly, this time around!

Yvette and Shane's Big Day

Yvette and Shane exchanged vows on a late spring day as gorgeous as they are.

We arrived at Yvette's bright and early to start the day with the bride and her sister, who was also the maid-of-honour.

Yvette's shoes have a label in each that says "Never Late." Talk about the ultimate wedding shoe!

The ceremony was held in a beautiful old church built with old limestone, lit on the inside solely by sunlight, diffused through its stained glass windows. Shane looked remarkably collected as his bride pulled up, and entered the church on her father's arm. If he was nervous, we couldn't tell!

Their reception was held in the function room in the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe. The venue was decorated with little items of Yvette and Shane's - starfish, shells - symbolising their mutual love, and that of the sea. The front-facing wall was a series of glass panels that overlooked every shade of blue in the ocean and sky.

After the reception was over, we snuck away with the bride and groom to City Beach, where Yvette kicked her shoes off in relief, and went splashing in the swash with abandon.

It wrapped up a great day perfectly; but don't take our word for it; the images speak for themselves.

It ended with a little bit of old Hollywood glamour:

Just came off a big weekend....

Charlene and I just came of a big weekend. Two back to back weddings on Saturday and Sunday. We were so tired but totally satisfied. We have already started the post processing work on the images from both the shoots. I am predicting that it will take us a couple of weeks before we will finish post processing the images.

Yvette and Shane, Sevan and Lorne - if you guys are reading this post.... once again, our heart-felt congratulations to your marriage and wonderful wedding day. Charlene and I had absolutely fabulous time at your weddings. You guys were just tops!!! Both weddings were fun and you guys were just so natural in front of the camera. We couldn't ask for better bridal couples than you two. We were so honoured to be your wedding photographers.

Sun and Michael's Wedding

It's taken long enough, but i'm finally blogging about Sun and Michael's wedding and reception. Sun and Michael got married in their home on September 9 (preview here), surrounded by family and close friends.

It was short ceremony conducted by Graham Lambert, who made it rather enjoyable for all included.

There was food and drinks aplenty, which would mark their reception too.

September 28 dawned fair and sunny; the perfect spring day. The reception was held at Matilda Bay Restaurant, an absolutely ideal setting for the occasion.

Michael and Sun arrived in a sleek black limo with immediate family before their guests, to ensure the finishing touches were complete to the venue.

There was much laughter while everyone got ready.

In fact, the laughter never stopped throughout the day. It was definitely a family affair, with everyone present being a significant part of their lives.

A leisurely lunch was followed by the cake cutting, speeches and the bouquet toss, then KC and i whisked the couple away for some location photos.

A heap of photos included below.

The bouquet toss by the riverside proved to be a winner, with Sun trying to sneak peeks at who was behind her while throwing.

At some stage throughout the day, Sun took a bit of a shine to her brother's camera. Nicholas lost his Pentax SLR to his sister, when she commandeered it and proceeded to take photos of everyone.

Michael followed suit a while later, and when i caught up with them a few weeks after the occasion, Sun informed me that they'd gotten themselves a D90!

Within weeks of owning their new camera, they've been bitten hard by the photography bug.

Pre-Wedding: Yvette and Shane

It was only a couple of months ago when a friend of mine, Seng Mah, whom I have gotten to know through a photography community called Photographers in Perth or PIP for short (ironically, this is such an uncreative name for the community - ha ha), asked if I would be interested to shoot a wedding for someone he knew through his photography work. You see, Seng had embarked on a photographic journey of doing niche and special subjects. It was his well-acknowledged project "Sons of Beaches" where he came to know Shane. Shane is a part-time surf-lifesaver and one of many people Seng photographed for his project.

It was some coincidence that Seng had planned for a trip overseas and was not able to do the wedding shoot for Shane and his fiancee, Yvette. Seng asked if I was interested to do the wedding shoot and I jumped at the opportunity.

Fast-forward a few months later, here I am, just having done a pre-wedding shoot with Yvette and Shane. It was a casual but fun affair. Together with my trusty partner photographer Charlene, we spent a couple of hours with Yvette and Shane visiting the various locations where the wedding would be held and photos taken. Yvette and Shane were a fun couple to work with. Never short of jokes or funny suggestions for their big day, we were participating in non stop laughters and dishing out various funny ideas to Shane and Yvette. The whole pre-wedding shoot was such good fun.

Here are some of the images we took at the pre-wedding:

Yvette and Shane tried balancing and walking along the roots of a huge fig tree.

Yvette and Shane found this gorgeous boat shed and jetty area along Matilda Bay. It has a lot of character. We reckon this is going to be a much beter place to shoot compared to the shoot-to-death Crawley Boatshed near UWA. Charlene and I are already throwing up ideas what we are going to do here...

There is also this huge staircase at the Ocean Beach Hotel at Cottesloe where Yvette and Shane will be having their reception. The lighting is just so perfect. Here is a shot of the gorgeous couple at the stair case.

Finally, the fashionable bride-to-be posed for me at the staircase. Isn't the lighting superb!

I think the soon coming wedding shoot is going to be fun and challenging. I am so glad that we Yvette and Shane have asked us to do their wedding.

Liza & Phil's beautiful spring wedding in Perth

Liza and Phil are from Queensland. Phil was originally from Perth but has moved to Queensland for work. They decided to return and have their wedding ceremony in Perth as Phil's parents are still residing here in Perth.

Their wedding day was just a couple of weeks ago. The weather was simply beautiful eventhough it was forecasted to rain on that day. Charlene and I had such a good time capturing beautiful images through the entire wedding.

Liza and Phil were just so sporting, they posed and acted up for us and had quite a bit of fun in front of the camera. Everything about the wedding was just so beautiful. There was never shot of beautiful and exquisite things to shoot, be it Liza's breath-taking gown or the small but interesting church. Here are, but a small sample of images we captured on that beautiful October Saturday:

The flower girls were so adorable, cute and absolutely love taking photos. They were definitely one of the cutest and photogenic flowergirls I have ever shot. They also happened to be Phil's daughters.

While the ladies were getting prepared, the boys were having some fun themselves getting ready for the day too...

The wedding service was held inside a small church which had really little available lighting inside. It did present some challenges to us in terms of freedom to move around and harnessing the available light. However, it also gave us plenty of opportunities to create some interesting images.

After the service, it was all fun and games - we proceeded to do some bridal portraits after a light-hearted session with group photos.

A wedding shoot is never complete without some romantic kissing photos:

From the time we shared with Liza and Phil, Charlene and I were able to witness the love they have between them - the love that will last forever till the end of time.

Oh, one last thing before I end this post... Phil requested some photos of him and his "pride and joy" - an imported American Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. For those readers who are not familiar with this car - a modified black 1982 Firebird Trans Am appeared in the television series Knight Rider. This car is definitely one of the best sports car in the 1980s.

I processed this image of Phil and his red sports car to give it a "Sin City" feel. Well, what do you guys think? :)

This also serves as a good reminder to us wedding photographers to be careful when we do wedding shoots. Too often when we try to move around to capture that perfect shot, we bump into people.

Unplanned 'Wedding Shoot'

I was spending some quality time at the Araluen Botanic Park with my family yesterday when I bumped into a bridal couple and their entourage.

Perhaps it was a case of "Occupational passion", when I saw a bridal couple, I couldn't help myself and started snapping some shots. Eventhough I did not have my full camera gear with me, I did have had a camera with a handy zoom lens on it. It gave me an opportunity to snap a few quick shots from a distance without disturbing the bridal party. The wedding photographer of that bridal party saw me snapping and joked that the bridal couple might even buy some shots of me. I politely smiled at her and moved off to a reasonable distant to get out of their way so that I would not disturb their shoot. I also began to realise that many visitors at the park also started gathering around the bridal party and taking photos of the bridal couple. It was definitely an interesting scene to behold.

After having gone through the photos I took of them, I thought many turned up quite alright and I am happy to add them to my portfolio. Amazingly, that brief snaps became and unofficial wedding shoot for me, albeit a very very short one. I still can't believe my "luck".

When I first bumped into the bridal couple, they were walking down on a path towards me.

Well, I had so much fun doing this shot. The bridal couple didn't seem to mind all the attention they were getting from me and other visitors. I guess I was simply at the right place and at the right time.

Monique and Dave (Pre-Wedding)

Wedding - Stephanie and Max

I've left off blogging a fair while, so i'm trying to catch up now! On July 11, KC and i had an early start shooting Stephanie and Max's wedding.

When we knocked on the door, a dressed and collected Max let us into their home, where Stephanie was getting her make up and hair done by Maggie.

"Until 5 minutes ago, i was completely in control," he confessed.

My best friend's wedding - Eileen and Rob

E and i have known each other since junior college, the stage of secondary education a lot of people know as senior high. We've managed to keep up a very close 11 year friendship despite being in different states/continents through most of it, and i often wonder that i scored such a great friend, confidante, and taker-of-bullsh*t, because she gets a heap of flak from me about everything, all the time, and doesn't actually seem to mind too much.

So when i asked her "have you found a photographer yet" after her boy proposed and wedding prep was underway, i was completely thrilled when she responded with "yeah, i'm assuming it will be you."

E's always been a bit of a vintage loving girl. She likes weird old things, and makes them work for her, as you'd see from her wedding finery, or her impressive collection of vintage cameras. When i happened onto Paige Elizabeth's Photographers... unbridal shoot, i just had to plagarise the theme, since she already had the equipment!

On the day, we utilised the beautiful lobby of the InterContinental Sydney, where she and Rob were staying before their honeymoon. Us girls went and monkeyed around taking photos while Rob got ready up in the room. No shots of the groom posted unfortunately, as he's a little shy!

The ceremony and lunch were held at Cafe Sydney, which was a fabulous location with a view (and what a view!), great food and wine, enhanced by the jazz band which gave rhythm to the relaxed tone of the day.

There was a short tea ceremony on the deck of the restaurant, followed by the marriage ceremony, which was classic of them both. Her vows were a poem by e. e. cummings, his were 5 chocolates...

...and three words, "yes that's it" after he'd given them to her one by one.

In keeping with his strong-silent-type exterior for the day, Rob found an outlet for his customary dry, wise-cracking self by announcing his newly married status with Scrabble:

Kids

One of the most interesting things about shooting weddings is all the other aspects of life that you do end up capturing during the day, especially that of children.

Children are such a great part of the wedding day, be they flower girls, page boys, ring bearers or simply family members running around. They add an element of spontaneity to weddings, and for us, this means opportunities to get some great candid shots of kids doing what they do best - being honest!

We've caught some great shots of kids at every wedding we've done photography honours at so far, and they're always fun to work with. The one thing you can count on with children is that when they stop having fun, they'll let you know.

But until they do, you get the best moments from them on (digital) film, espoused by this little fella playing hide and seek with KC's zoom:

Peek-A-Boo!

Wedding - Allison and Danny

It's not often that you see the groom having so much fun with the bouquet, but that was definitely the case at Allison and Danny's wedding, which was held at the Burswood Golf Course - which would explain the golf cart! It was a fine setting for a splendid occasion, and Ed, KC and Mark were there to document the day.

With 3 photographers again, we got to cover both the bride and the groom's pre-ceremony preparation, which resulted in plenty of candid moments, some poignant, some light-hearted, and some, timeless.

It was an elegant ceremony, with the bride in a simple, deep-ruby gown matching the rose petals leading her up the red carpet to her groom. Though emotions were running high as expected, it was the laughter that was most memorable. From the dressing room, down the red carpet, and all the way around the golf course, there were guffaws and giggles aplenty.

The openness of the location presented a little bit of a challenge owing to the cloudiness of the day. The lighting started to change dramatically when we reached the signing and ring exchange 'milestone' of the day. Uneven sprays of the evening sun and shade provided many opportunities for some creativity, helped along by ever present Lightspheres. Thank you Gary Fong!

The photography highlight of the day however, had to be the group photo. We led everyone around the green (no high heels allowed) to one of the hills on the course for this very important shot. A chair and the slope of the hill let Ed position himself and the guests. The flower girls, who by then had 'reloaded' their baskets, flung rose petals in the air as the cameras went shutter crazy! The moment, lighting, and everyone's positioning was perfect at this moment, and we got some fabulous takes.

If there was any anxiety left at this point, it certainly would have disappeared after the bride and groom hopped into the golf buggy and "drove off" into the sunset!

We see a lot of weddings as photographers who specialise in this business, but these are always the moments that remind us all over again, that each wedding is different because people are so different, and it's the range of emotion unique to each couple and their loved ones, that is priceless.

Wedding - Lia and Stuart

Lia and Stuart got married in an intimate ceremony on April 27. Surrounded by family, friends, and helped along by their 4 lovely children, they exchanged vows and celebrated their union with those closest to them in a cosy garden setting.

The reception was a bevy of great food, speeches and some slick moves on the dance floor after dessert. Lia baked a hundred cupcakes for the occasion in place of the traditional wedding cake:

Graduation Photo Shoots

Back in March and April we shot two graduations at UWA for Bernice and Sarah separately.

Graduation is such a tremendous milestone, marking another phase of life, new beginnings and adventures. We approached each of these graduation shoots with a desire to capture the graduates as they were on the day - glowing with achievement at a long journey finished well - but looking towards their future, and the dreams and goals that await.

Capturing Couples in Love

The wondrous feeling of being in love, they say, cannot be expressed in pictures alone. But this hasn't stopped us from trying. Our passion is to capture couples in love, to freeze time and to prolong precious and special moments, to record the expressions and emotions.

The German playwright and poet, Friedrich Halm, summed up how we perceive couples in love is all about

Capturing Intimacy

Wedding photographers love capturing intimacy.

A wedding shouldn't be about boring photos of stiff looking brides and uneasy grooms, with family members around them sporting painted-on grins (or in some cases, frowns). A wedding should be all about the love that prompted the occasion, and the joy radiating from the bride, groom, and those celebrating their special day with them.

There is an abundance of welling emotion at weddings. Laughter, tears and everything in between make these moments sudden and ever so fleeting, but pivotal to the memories of the day.

At Passion Photography, our preference is to combine traditional wedding photography with a photo journalistic style. We aim to capture the special moments that tell the story of the day, as we understand that it's these moments that so often underline the magic of the day, and form part of the memories so precious to the wedding couple.

Brand Loyalty

Our group is evenly split as far as camera systems go. Mark and KC are Canon enthusiasts where Ed and I spend our hard-earned on Nikon.

With the release of the Nikon D3 and D300, comparisons have resumed with renewed vigour, beautifully espoused by this blog post and its accompanying images.

A lot has been said, by people more qualified/informed than I, on the Canon vs Nikon debate, Google is your best friend if you're interested in the endless conversations of the superiority of one over the other (but i hadn't realised that Canon has specialised gear for astrophotography via this link).

Perhaps Ken Rockwell sums it up best:

Nikon and Canon are as good as each other. Each are multi-billion dollar optical companies who have been making some of the world's best optics for numerous consumer, military and industrial applications for decades and decades.

Each makes lenses as parts of multi-million-dollar steppers used in making electronic chips with more precision anything needed for photography, and each make other optics that sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars in other applications. They each make our cameras and lenses out of the same stuff from which they create these other products.
